What Its Like To Live The Tropical Island Lifestyle

What could be better than living on a tropical island?

Almost all of us have thought about it from time to time. As you’re sitting in a boring meeting, a traffic jam that seems to go on for miles, or even as you’re shoveling snow out of your driveway, your thoughts turn to paradise. Thinking about walking along the beach, drinking from coconut shells, and never having to buy anything but flip flops again can leave a smile on your face even as you face the worst meeting of the week.

But the fact of it is while some of us dream about living on a tropical island, others are actually doing it. (And we’re having the time of our lives!)

However, if you’ve never lived the tropical island lifestyle before, there are a few things you should know before you uproot your life and family, and head for the Big Island. While Hawaii may be considered paradise for some, you have to understand the lifestyle before you decide to live it. It is different than being here for a week of vacation.

Here are a few of the pros and cons.

Tropical Island Living Offers Unmatched Beauty

There’s something to be said about having beauty outside of your door all the time. And here on the Big Island, no matter what your idea of beauty is, you’ll find it just a few steps away. Its always green, the water is always perfect for whatever you choose to do, and who can argue with the sunrises and sunsets that are sure to please.

Living At A Relaxed Pace

When you live on a tropical island, life is a little bit slower, a little more relaxed. Far from the Mainland, the Big Island offers you the chance to truly get away from the hustle and bustle you once knew. Depending on where you decide to live, you’ll find quiet beaches, great places to walk and roam, and ways to relax throughout your day that simply could never be in a more populated area. They say people live longer here on the Big Island … the relaxed lifestyle is a big part of it.

You’ll Find Strong Communities

When you share space with millions of people – as most people living in big cities do – having a closeness with your community may have been difficult at best. When you find the right neighborhood for your lifestyle here on the Big Island, a strong sense of community will form right from the beginning. We each have our reasons for choosing this as our home. And that common bond means we have things in common. Who better to share your island lifestyle values with other than people that chose tropical living for the same reasons?

You May Face Limited Supplies

It’s a fact, when you live far away from some of the main supply sources, some of the things you loved on the Mainland may be in short supply. Consumer goods, gasoline, even your favorite fruits and vegetables might not be available when you head to your local store. And if they are available, they may be more expensive then what you’re used to.

Tropical Living Is Slower Paced

Yes, this can be a pro and a con. The very thing that may have brought you to the Big Island in the first place may leave you frustrated at times too. Everyone here lives life at a slower pace. If you want something fast and are used to getting things done quickly, you may be frustrated with the “tomorrow” attitude at times. You’ll have to learn to unwind and slow down. You’ll have to learn to take things in stride as they happen, realizing in some cases “tomorrow” is the best way to approach things.
